The "God is love" mantra is far from Biblical. It is a whitewashing of theology to make an otherwise unpalatable deity of our ancestors more acceptable for today's culture. The God of the Bible might love, but he also hates. According to the Bible, God hates: detestable things (Deut 12:31), erect sacred stones (Deut 16:22), all who do wrong (Pslam 5:5), wickedness (Pslam 45:7), haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked schemes, feet that are quick to rush into evil, a false witness who pours out lies, and a person who stirs up conflict in the community (Proverbs 6:16-19), Esau (Malachi 1:2). And a couple clear acts of hatred by God: "I will take vengeance on my adversaries and repay those who hate me. I will make my arrows drunk with blood, while my sword devours flesh..." (Deut 32:41-42) "Because of all their wickedness in Gilgal, I hated them there. Because of their sinful deeds, I will drive them out of my house. I will no longer love them" (Hosea 9:15) (I apologize if your god is not the god of the Bible... this is an assumption on my part.)

This is an important part of the main question because many people who are quick to adopt a religion, usually are sold a version of it—call it the "Joel Osteen" version–happy happy love love. The problem arises when people crack open their Bibles and read past the New Testament, or start asking some tough theological questions. In the age of information, it is very difficult to stay sheltered from information that will ultimately shatter delusions.
